Loughborough Endowed Schools LGS 1st XI vs  Welbeck DSFC
On: Wednesday, 21 Feb 2018
Venue: Away

A 1v3 victory away to Welbeck in the first leg sees LGS take a strong position into the second leg of the 1st XI trophy with three away goals from Corden, Rana and Pagett-Wright. A solid, measured first half performance capitalised on Welbeck errors and the second half performance shut out the game ready for the home leg in three weeks’ time.

LGS made the sort of start the team has been looking for this season and within 2 minutes, they were ahead thanks to a quick shift of the ball and James 'Higuain' Corden tucking under the keeper for 0v1. The pressure was maintained with Welbeck sloppy in possession, the LGS midfield were pressing high and this was creating hesitation at the back. Within 15 minutes, a good ball from midfield put through Jakob 'Immobile' Rana who had his initial effort saved but just beat Corden to the rebound to make it 0v2. The rest of the half saw LGS in control, creating a number of decent chances with 'Verratti' Werb offering some steel and nice touches in the midfield. Tom 'Bonucci' Gamble started in defence and looked assured, carrying the ball forward and feeding the forwards and wing-backs. The half-time whistle came with LGS in control.

The second half saw the midfield take a better position and, overall, there were not too many events in the half apart from the two goals. LGS were happy for Welbeck to have the ball and were able to position themselves accordingly. Welbeck managed to make it 1v2 from a wide free-kick that was defended initially but failure to deal with the second-ball cost LGS. Less than five minutes later, LGS pushed up the field and forced a corner allowing 'Verratti' Werb to deliver for 'Morgan' Pagett-Wright to power in a near-post header. For the last 20 minutes, with a 3v1 lead, LGS made the rest of the game pretty forgettable but were efficient in seeking the final whistle - taking a 3v1 lead back to Quorn for the 2nd leg on the 14th March.
